RETF Not Eating.......I'm Worried.

Doppleganger Aug 12, 2003 01:09 AM

I got a RETF this past Saturday and it is about 1 inch long. I have offered it crickets and mealworms to no avail. I have also seen very little movement out of the frog.......even late at night. He appears to be in excellent health otherwise. Any thoughts on what may be keeping him from eating? Is he still getting acclimated?

Well, they're very secretive. So if you have the lights on or they see you they won't eat, mostly. Also, if you have lights on at odd hours they might not, either. And they're usually only active for a few hours of the night, not almost all night like some other frogs.

So, try offering it smaller prey and limit observing it for daytime, is what I think. If it won't eat in the next couple of days I'd take it to a vet just to be sure.

Well, I think it ate some mealies last night, as there were 3 in the dish I put in there and now there is just 1.......I saw him out last night so maybe this is a good sign.

Could be, but the mealies could have also possibly crawled out.

Anyway, if your RETF is a 1-incher, you should be feeding it fairly small crickets. Even if they can eat the larger ones, at least mine find the smaller ones more appealing (although some of my other frog species seem to think bigger=better). Also, I've read that there have been some studies that found that many smaller crickets have higher nutritional value than less larger crickets, but I certainly can't verify that.

Anyway, I do hope that your froggies start to eat better! Sometimes, they're a little uneasy for the first few days in their environment (or due to any changes) and may not eat as much then
