feeder fish question

burunx Mar 08, 2007 09:29 AM

Hello,

I have raised feeder guppies and they seem to breed quickly and easily in a simple environment.

I purchased rosy reds in hopes they would breed, but they have not and I get about 1 dead one a day. they are in the same type of environment as the guppies. I have noticied that the rosys seem to like to hide more and i can provide more hidey spaces.

any suggestions??

thank you!!!

as far as i know rosy reds or "tuffies" are egg layers so it will be alittle more of a proccess than the guppies, and far as breeding them goes, the more comfortable they are the more likely they will breed, i would say though stick with live barers like guppies mollies platies and swordtails. hope this helped

Guppys are live bearers and I don't think Rosys are. Plus rosys like lots of O2 and or current and will grow to several inches before they mature. Maybe raise Mollys for a bit bigger feeders.

Rosies and other Pimephales minnows (including the 'tuffies', 'fatheads' and 'bullheads' sold as bait) are generally bred in ponds. I don't think they can be bred in an aquarium, certainly not in a 10 or 20 gallon. In any case, the feeder-sized rosies are juveniles.
