Baby Red Chironius: They are green

Oxyrhopus Mar 08, 2007 10:13 AM

Hatchling Red Chironius scurulus are born green and turn red within the first year or two of life.

Their color change is not completed within a week or two like with green tree pythons etc, but over a several month period. Black specs appear and they turn blackish and then reddish. Neat stuff.

Here is a photo of a baby I just imported yesterday and an adult imported 2 weeks ago. And yes, they are the same species of snake.

And Sighthunter, sorry, but I ain't selling or trading the baby even for all the marbles in the world.

That is way too cool. Looks like an adult should eat mice? Hoping. I am also curious but my book says that their tails can break off like a lizard and the book did show pics. After seing those pics I may be adding some of those the collection. You mentioned siphlophis like you had more than one. A pair?

Yea, I got them but the female needs a couple years growth to breed. I got them eating pinks from my fingers.

I tried to buy the female, the male, the pair.. but Dan didn't want. So Dan, you have to produce us some baby.

Dang man, import some for us too!!! Those are incredible man, I have been eyeballing the Rusty Whipsnake for some time. Are they frog eaters, or do you have them on mice? How bad are they when they first come in (Parasite Wise)?
Thanks,

I just fed the adult red a 4 dollar iguana against my wifes pleas, but you gotta do what you gotta do to keep them snakes alive. And yea, they eat frogs and lizards and require a few doses of pancur upon arrival and I will get more eventually as Surinam just opened again to exporting wild caughts.

Hey Dan,

Man, the color of those things are worth their feeding habits. Send an email to greenpinemuseum@yahoo.com.
