Natural Habitat??

TonyC130 Mar 08, 2007 10:35 AM

I was just wondering what the REAL natural habitat is for Leopard Geckos in the wild is, I've read so many different things in books and on the internet and they all seem to contradict one-another. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks,
Tony C.

They live on clay dirt soiled areas with patchy grass. No sand is anywhere around. haha Good luck! Hope all goes well! Make sure whatever you do you give us pics!! I would love to see what you come up with!!

Eublepharis macularius have a fairly large range, from Afghanistan, Northwestern India, and Pakistan and there have even been specimens collected in the eastern part of Iran.

Leopard geckos have been collected on a hard soil which contained a layer of sand covering the top. Here is a quote from J. A. Anderson's "A report
on the gecko Teratolepis fasciata (describing the same area where Eublepharis sp.) occur from The Journal of
Bombay Natural History Society from 1964. The collection
site was a deserted cemetery at Raj Malk, district Thatta on the
western edge of the Indus delta in Pakistan. "The terrain is flat with
an average elevation of less than 10 ft. above sea level. The soil is
loose, grey sand and silt."

It is believed that the founding stock of all of the captive bred leos in the US was caught in Sindh, Pakistan, which is in the southern part of the country.

Here is an image to show you what the area of Sindh looks like.

Szczerbak and Golubev (1996) say that E. macularius lives..."on
clay-gravel soil covered by sand and abounding in bushes of
Zygophyllum."

They do not directly live only on sand was what i was stating. Which you have proved me right. There maybe sand mixed in but it's not like walking on a beach with endless sand. That is why 50% of leos die from impaction because people are not really aware of this.

That's what happens when you use strictly just sand!

Well, I was only replying to your words:

"They live on clay dirt soiled areas with patchy grass. No sand is anywhere around. haha"

There are areas were Eublepharis have been documented as living that have a lot of sand. Just saying

No and it never will people have there preferences. I personally would NEVER put any of my herps in any sort of danger, and there is plenty of proof that leos will get impacted from being on the sand. SO as MY personally opinon i would never use or recommend it for use. Other may disagree and that is your choice. Yes i currently own 7 leos and have 2 on back order. I also have plenty of other herps as well.

Also a debate is just that it is always the owners choice in the end so getting all fired up will just make you look dumb!

I know that i would never want this to happen.....
