Another Pancur question

TexasTreeViper Mar 08, 2007 12:43 PM

The Pancur I picked up from the vet was labeled 1ml/20lbs. If I dilute it 1ml Pancur to 3 ml H20 what would the dosage be then?

If you add 1ml pancur to 3 mls of water, you'd have 4 mls. (Just to make clear that you're not adding 1ml to 2mls to equal 3 mls)

Then it would be 4mls per 20 lbs or 1ml per 5lbs. Is the label for 20lbs of large mammal or 20lbs of reptile. You should clarify this before using it.

you know the number of milligrams of fenbendazole there are in each ml of solution in its original form. The 1ml/20lbs. doesn't really tell you anything about the dosage until you know this. It should be on the label or package insert. Once you know that concentration per volume of original solution in mg/ml, you can calculate the amount you need from that quantity based on the correct dosage for reptiles using the reptiles weight.

For interest only, if the 1ml/20lbs was actually set up as a reptile dosage, there would need to be 500 mg fenbendazole in each ml of the original solution.

I based that calculation on kilograms instead of pounds. If the 1ml/20 lbs was based on a reptile dosage, there would actually be 250 mg fenbendazole in each ml of the original solution. Sorry for the confusion, I'm used to working in kilograms.

I'm guessing it has 500mg/kg of the drug. All I know is that the vet told me was it was to be administered at 1ml/20lbs.

Sorry, I meant 500mg/ml.

Panacur is only 22% fenbendazole in solid form. There's no way you have 500mg/ml (50%) solution. Most likely it is 10% (100mg/ml) SUSPENSION. The word "suspension" is important here. It means that the panacur is not disolved in the liquid, but the liquid is the same density as the panacur so that it stays "suspended". If you go mixing it with water, you will change the density and the FBZ will settle out, making it useless.

You need the right size syringe and dosing needle to work with it as is. You also need to get clarification on exactly what you have before basing your dosing calculations on my (or anyone elses) assumtions.
