EGG BOUND BEARDIE

glennherp1 Mar 08, 2007 04:47 PM

MY SANDFIRE DRAGON LAYED AN INFERTILE CLUTCH OF EGGS A FEW MONTHS AGO. SHE HAS NEVER BEEN INTRODUCED TO A MALE. SHE HAS TWO EGGS INSIDE OF HER STILL. SHE IS GETTING REALLY SKINNY AND LATHERGIC. DOES ANYBODY KNOW OF A WAY TO GET THOSE EGGS OUT WITHOUT SURGERY? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

CALL A VET RIGHT NOW!!!!!!! and give her a bath in worm water.

The best thing to do is contact a herp vet, somebody familiar with lizards.

It may be possible for the vet to get the eggs out without surgery but giving the fact your dragon is skinny, lathargic etc, it may be too late to do anything, sounds like she may be too weak to withstand surgery if other methods to get her to pass the eggs don't work.

It really depends on why the eggs didn't get laid. If they are lodged or tangled in the oviduct, there is no other way to get them out other than surgery. Sometimes (at least with snakes) it may be possible to puncture the stuck egg, suck out the contents and let the empty shell pass with the next bowel movement.

What should have happened, withing 2-5 days after she laid her infertile clutch and you saw she had eggs still inside of her, was when you should have rushed her to the hospital. After two months, those eggs are most likely rotten and may have caused severe health problems. Going to a vet is your only chance to ensure your dragon will have a chance to survive in my opinion.

Get to a vet asap...this will probably be your dragons only chance of survival. Medical issues like this are much easier to solve if you take action when they first happen - not when you wait for months until the dragon is physicaly debilitated.

Go talk to a good herp vet and they may be able to save her. If you cannot afford the surgery (which is likely quite expensive) they may let you surrender the dragon to the clinic and they will take over from there and then if she makes it find her a new home.

Yes i have to agree with everyone else on this as well. I can't even believe you waited 2 months. That's amazing to me. I would have taken her the next day.
