Egg-Bound Sorong

vegasbilly Mar 08, 2007 06:23 PM

After laying 14 good eggs, one is still sitting right at the cloacal entrance and I've seen no effort on her part to finish! This has been so for the last 3 days. I've read where Oxytocin may help induce her to push this last one out. Any ideas? She's going to the vet tomorrow.

Sometimes they can massage the egg out. If it won't come out and it's sitting right there, they will aspirate the contents and then remove the rest of it when it's deflated. Oxytocin has mixed results with reptiles I hear but it's used fairly often to try to get eggs to move. Usually not just for one at the opening though, it's usually for a lot of eggs that are going no where. Hope she does o.k. So far I've not had an egg binding issue.....knock on wood.

I had the same problem in a kingsnake. My vet tried oxitocin, but it did nothing. The vet wanted to do surgery and rip me off. I had a friend from a pet store asperate the egg with a syringe and pushed it out. My vet is surgery happy. Derek

Hey Bill,

first let me say, congrats on all the success this year. It never gets old even after this many years, to see a nature take it's course. I haven't had much time to post lately and have some serious catching up to do. School, work, snakes, fiancee'....it's a task that requires more time than I have.lol.

As for your eggbinding problem, I've seen it a few times in kingsnakes and only once in a chondro. Most of the time, they can/will push the eggs out within a few days or so. If they end up holding on longer, sometimes surgery is necessary. I've heard of a couple of cases where female went on to normal breeding down the road. I wish you luck. Sometimes they just pain us.

Congrats again.

I aspirated the egg myself and out it came in its entirety! Now hopefully she'll resume feeding soon! Thanks for all the advice!
