Accidently defrosted mice-can I refreeze

dakski Mar 08, 2007 06:25 PM

I accidently defrosted the last two frozen mice from the pet store - long story. In any event, they mostly thawed (maybe even completely thawed) to room temperature and then I put them in the freezer.

Can I still use them or do I need to find fresh frozen mice?

Feeding is Saturday, but I can probably put it off till Monday or Tuesday if need be - Doug is getting ready to shedd and I have him on a 7 day feeding schedule (he is adopted and was not fed regurarly - I am trying to fatten him up). I can push that back a little and feed at ten days instead.

Thanks all!

David

The snake probably won't care but they'll likely being "goo-ified" from the freeze and thaw and freeze and thaw.

I fed a mouse like that to my girl and it exploded when she constricted it. She ate all the shreds that were attached to the main body but it was a mess!

The mice should be fine...many snakes are opportunists, meaning that they will eat mice and/or rats that are already dead when they find them in the wild. I've even read where some people have had problem feeders, and the only way they could get their snake to eat was to thaw the mouse, let it set out for awhile, then refreeze it, and thaw again when ready to feed! I've thawed mice out before, and have a snake not eat, so instead of wasting it, I've just frozen them again. I've never had anything happen like in the other response!

Once in a while you'll get one that comes apart in the belly area, but it depends on circumstances!,....in my experiences, they come apart more often when they are thawed out to quickly, as in people using hot water, etc......this tends to sort of "pre-cook" the very thin skin of the belly of the prey item and the skin looses it's integrity, making it easy to rip open...................................................Doug
