Nile question...

nile_keepr Mar 08, 2007 08:16 PM

Just wondering if anyone out there could offer some advice on this topic, or perhaps a website that does...

Im wondering what average Nile length/weight/etc. are by age.

I have a 2 y/o Nile and I just wanna make sure he's on the right track. Dont wanna stunt his growth by giving him too small an enclosure... God knows hes got alotta growing to do...

If husbandry is in proper order a nile can reach lengths of three and a half to four feet in the first year. I've had two for the last 11 months. One is around 3'8" the other is over four feet. Both were less than 12" when I bought them.

Too small an enclosure will not necessarily stunt your monitors growth although it will cause other problems. You need high temps 80-95 and 130-150 basking. They like a lot of water at least enough to submerge over their backs and should be fed as much as they will eat daily. Mice, chicks, various whole seafoods and roaches. Mine mostly eat mice chicks and quail.
The enclosure should be at the VERY least 8'wide x 4'deep x 4'tall. That is the bare minimun bigger is better.

Also, anyone happen to have a link to a site that shows the monitor "family tree"?
