CYPRUS MAIL (Nicosia) 06 March 07 Police stop driver speeding to hospital after snake bite
A 53-year-old Paphos man was almost fined for speeding until he managed to explain he’d been bitten by a snake and was rushing to hospital, police said yesterday.
Ioannis Elia was picking wild shrubs near Aphrodite’s Rock on Saturday afternoon when he was bitten on the foot.
In his haste to get to hospital for treatment, Elia put his foot down, breaking all speed limits. His fast driving did not go unnoticed by traffic police, who pulled him over with the intention of booking him.
“He was driving really, really fast and so the officer initially pulled him over for speeding,” a police spokesman told the Cyprus Mail.
“When the officer saw he wasn’t at all well and heard what had happened he escorted him personally to hospital, calling ahead to the hospital to inform the accident and emergency department about what had happened.”
Upon arrival at hospital the 53-year-old was administered the necessary treatment and kept in for observation. His condition is said to be good and he is out of danger, police said.
