Getting rid of slugs and aquatic snails ... how ?

Marcin Aug 12, 2003 06:29 AM

Hey,

I need to rid my tank of these pests. They devoured few of my miniature orchids and any aquatic plants that I put in. I need these f@#$@ out.

I need a solution that will be safe for my frogs. There is a chemical used in aquariums for snails (copper sulphate) but I heard some aquarium horror stories. I don't want to risk my frogs. Especially that they're breading like crazy now.

Any input would be appreciated.
Marty

This is how I got rid of slugs in a heavily planted viv. Every night an hour or so after lights out I took a flashlight and looked for them. It took a few weeks but now there are no more slugs. I don't have any experience wqith aquatic snails.

I forgot what it was but it was totally safe. I did this once but i forgot what it was and im sure it is on the web. There was a site where it tells you to put something in a petri dish and leave it in the tank. As time pass the snails will go to the dish to eat the food and you just remove the dish and dump the snails from it. I'll try to look for it and get back to you.

Sometimes a beer trap with work for slugs, but you have to cover it so your frogs don't get into it. The hand-picking method (flashlight at night) as someone mention, works, but you have to keep on it. How deep is your waterway? (One of mine is a paludarium with an aquarium section with tropical fish.) If it's deep enough for aquarium fish, clown loaches will clean up snails. Otherwise, removing the water plants, washing them and removing any snails you find may control them a bit, but still doesn't get rid of them. Other than removing your frogs to a critter keeper for the duration, trying one the the snail-begone products, then changing the water several times, (and that might not even work,) I've never discovered a safe way to get rid of them in a shallow waterway.

Clown loaches can get like ten inches long : ) Yo yo loaches also eat snails and stay a lot smaller. They are also usually cheaper.
