Help with enclosure

seductivereptile Mar 09, 2007 11:40 AM

Ok, so I am thinking about making a home for my egyptian baby. I know they need mega space as adults. So, I am just kicking some ideas around and wanted some input.
So far, I have one idea that I like a lot, but want to know if it would be functional. Plans:
Made completely using acrylic sheets of 1/4 inch thickness.
Finished dimensions would be 2' deep x 4' long x 12" height.
I would mount the light fixtures on the inside. I would like to use this enclosure as a coffee table type display, unless it would be too stressful for him, if that makes any sense. I know this enclosure wouldn't be large enough for a full grown egyptian, but my guy is only 6.5 inches long and I've heard that it will take years for him to reach full length. So I guess I am wondering how long an enclosure this size would last him, length wise. I have not bought any materials yet, so any input would be so much appreciated.

Here is a opinion.
The Acrylic will be scratched senseless in a months time.
Glass is the only real alternative.
I did the same thing(acrylic)...only to replace it way too soon.
I waas warned by a friend as well....
The dimensions of the enclosure willl be fine depending on the growth of the hatchling for approx 2 years.
Some may disagree with this.
However to be practical, real estate becomes very tough when they get large. So give the guildines for cage dimensions some serious attention.
Hope this helps..
This was my cage design back then. this cages still holds my smaller female, with the acyrlic panel fronts exchanged for glass..

Ok, so acrylic might not be a good idea, since I guess they do scratch it up. My lil guy hardly comes out and I'm wondering if having a larger space will help. Being realistic, what size enclosure will a single adult need? My father builds custom cabinets so building special sizes shouldn't be a problem.
