Is this a "High Red"?

waspinator421 Mar 09, 2007 05:52 PM

Hello everyone! I am wondering what my adult male should be called. To me, he looks like a very dark red, but it may just be normal. I am still learning about these wonderful creatures, and would appreciate your thoughts. So, "High Red" or "Normal" or something else?

Also, where is the cut-off between the color phases. Is it just a judgement call when it could be either-or?

Thanks in advance!

Definately close by any call. The last pic cinched it for me, IMHO, Very nice normal. Could throw some high red babies though.

And of course, I well know getting the true colors to show in a pic is tough. So, he could be more red in person.

Oh yeah, no clear "rule" on what is "high" red or orange for that matter. Definitely a judgement call.

IMO to be judged a "High" red or orange, the BRB must clearly show a lot of the desired color. Very easy to see when you have outstanding examples of all three. And yes, there is a huge area where it could be called either way.

I'm actually spoiled and probably have a higher than normal expectation of a high color BRB. I heve extremes of both red and orange to compare to.

Aubrey,
...I would call that snake either a red or a red-orange phase. We all have different ideas about where to draw the line between the color phases. I like orange BRBs but I do have lots of red-orange ones in my collection. My reddest Rainbow Boas are my Isla Marajo Rainbows, Epicrates cenchria barbouri. These two are sisters. Since this PIC was taken the redder one has gotten much larger than the red-orange one.

They have really wide dorsal markings and they even run into the ocelli on the sides and that is pretty cool giving it that sort of broken pattern too. Are they wc or cb and how old if cb? Good luck with breeding those girls.

Thanks very much for your thoughts. I think I will just call him a "Red" because he does look reddish to me. But I think you're right, he probably doesn't fit the "High Red" criteria.

Thanks again!
