Cryptic Ovulation!

boaphile Mar 10, 2007 09:31 AM

It's a slow breeding season this year here but it has not stopped completely. I waited too late to put my males in with females due to being so busy with making cages and racks for our good customers. But some things are still happening. We had a little ovulation last night and this morning from the Cryptic Boa! (March 9-10, 2007) She was bred by the Cryptic male. Below I have copied and pasted an earlier thread showing a mess of pictures of them both as big adults and when they were babies. I am very anxious to see what comes from this breeding. Erich Gaertner originally owned these kids. He bred the same female that is ovulating several years ago and had a very small mostly bad litter so we did not get a good sampling what might be expected from these unique animals. I hope I am fortunate to get a better look at what may come. Time will tell...

Have you seen the Cryptic Boas?

What is a Cryptic Boa you might ask? Cryptic Boas just popped up a few years ago in a litter of babies sold to John Carlson from the Chicago area. John noticed some of the babies were completely missing side blotches in patches on the sides. From John they went to Eric Gaertner of Strictly Boas fame. Eric had them until he relented and sent them on to the Boa Black Hole where they really belong. Each area on the side that is missing the side blotches has a wide black stripe at the edge of the belly just like Motley Boas do. They are also shaped weird. It's very hard to explain and impossible to photograph. But, they are shaped more round that other Boas. They are wider and rounder than other Boa Constrictors. I have never seen any other Boa like that and both of the adult Cryptics have this weird shape. You can kind of get a feel for this shape from the first picture below. Very weird. Motley Boas have a differently shaped hear. Perhaps this different shape of the body along with the unique missing pattern, may translate into something really whacky in the babies. I sure hope we get to find out this year... Now we don't know what will come of this project but you know we will do whatever it takes and spend whatever amount of time it takes to find out...

This is the side of the female:

This is another shot of her showing the black stripe sort of. I didn't want to disturb her any more than I did since he was busy with her if you know what I mean...

Here are a bunch more pictures of them Eric took when they were youngsters:

They aren't babies any more...

Thanks Erich and John!

There are a couple interesting things going on there that
make me think along the lines of yellow belly ball pythons.
Which make white snakes. Hmmm

I sure hope so. Good luck

This guy was produced here. Although his side patterns aren't the same as the Cryptics, the belly is similar. Their were a handful of these in the litter.

I sold him and a sibling to another KS forum user.I'd sure like to see a recent pic of him (hint hint).
Nice Cryptics Jeff. I always wondered where they went. I should've known. Take care, David

Thanks for posting that David. I was going to post it yesterday, but couldn't find the pics. What really strikes me about that guy is how "dirty" he is. A lot of pastels have clean bellies, but this guy has speckles everywhere else but his belly. I tried to breed him this year, but no interest. Hopefully next year.

I'll try and get some recent pics of him soon.
