adopted a 1" s/v house (?) gecko yesterday - have ???

lele Aug 12, 2003 08:47 AM

Hi - I was given a baby house gecko (that's what the guy said it is - will try to get photo and post) yesterday that was found roaming the back of a PetCo. He said she(?) will drink from bowl, care sheet says must mist. He said vita-sand for substrate.

Can you direct me to some GOOD care sheets for these guys? I am not new to herps so with proper info I am sure this little one will be fine. Thanks!

OK, now the sand isn't THAT orange LOL! (don;t ask why I picked this color to begin with! He/she is 1" snout to vent. Is the cricket near its tail too big or OK size? I have them and hydei FF.

Help on i.d appreciated! Thanks

Looks like it could be a Hemidactylus, but not a Turcicus.

Here's even more pictures for reference: http://www.gekkota.org/html/h__turcicus.html

Or hemidactylus turcicus for several years. Actually I found him in my back room also. I kept him in a tank with my treefrogs. (redeyes) and actually he thrived for years in there with them.
It was a more humid enviornment and since he was outside in Florida he did well there. I will try and find you info about them but that setup looks very dry. I did not think they were a desert species.
Also does yours have very bumpy skin. I can't tell the skin texture from the photo. Does it have small bumps on it like the texture of a leopard geckos skin. Small knobby round bumps (in case you never felt a leopard gecko).
Or does it have smooth skin.

The guy that set you up with sand and stuff for that gecko just wanted you to buy stuff and he was misinformed.
I knew that was a tropical gecko when I saw it. You need a setup similar to the chams with bark or coco fiber as a substrate or moss maybe not a desert setup like he sold you.
Oh I hate petshops!
I am going to e-mail you directly so I don't get sued.

The URGENT post was great! Looks just like him! So even if he is only 1" I should put him in a 10 gal? What about a 10 gal on end (at least for now)? then it will be much taller than wide.

The only stuff the petstore guy talked me into was the vita-sand and since I didn't know what species for sure I got it. He gave it to me for free and the "reptile guy" was off. I do know they like to hide so he has a nice little log (was Bart's favorite in a mini basking area) and other hides.

What is the diff b/t Hemidactylus frenatus and Hemidactylus turcicus?

as always - thanks! lele

As this is a typical gecko, you can use just planting soil as substrates, also, you may mist the encloser 3-4 times a week in order to maintain humidity.
One more thing I should remind you, it is wise to provide some banches for it to climb and hide.^-^

thanks! got him/her all set up in a new tank last night. Will try to determine gender next time he's plastered to the glass! LOL!

I am assuming it's eating the big FF I have been putting in. I am hesitant to leave crix in there all the time b/c they will hide and I know they will sometimes nibble on a sleeping herp!
