Escaped Venomous...what do you think?

afoll Mar 11, 2007 06:15 PM

I keep boas, this is why I wouldn't keep venomous snakes. They are beautiful but deadly. Opinions wanted on this issue.
Thanks,
Andy

To be permitted in my city an escape proof room must be inspected. That is only a second line defence.Proper houseing is a must.

Saying that you don't keep them because they will escape is like saying that you don't drive a car with a V8 engine because it will go 120mph.

It will only go 120mph if you floor it, and a venomous snake will only escape if you are irresponsible.

Our reptile room has a door that seals in a way that will not allow an escaped reptile out of the room. There are no holes or cracks or other avenues of escape from the room.

All venomous snakes are in locking cages with hinged lids/doors and secure latches. If a cage is unlocked someone is tending to it and/or the snake has been moved to a secure, temporary container while the habitat is cleaned or water is serviced.

Most reptiles that free themselves are the result of substandard housing and lack of proper security. Those who will put a venomous snake in an aquarium with a board over the top, and a brick on top of the board, are completely to blame. If you can't house it safely and correctly don't take it in.

Truly, the same goes for constrictors, colubrids, and everything else. Most folks wouldn't put a Pitbull in a cardboard box and think it's secure, but they'll put a snake in one, or some other substandard container with a mismatched lid, and think it's fine.
