How dangerous is the venom from a FWC?
I have a load of research on the venoms from variety of rear-fanged colubrds and here's what I can determine about FWC venom. Among rear-fanged snakes it has registered some of the highest levels of protein activity (Active proteins in the venom cause the effects from a bite). Also, this species has some of the most well documented envenomations of any other rear-fanged snakes because of its widespread avaiability in the pet trade. Among those documented envenomations the worst bites came from very large adult FWC's, as you would expect. The worst symptoms recorded have been local pain, swelling, discoloration around bite area, prolonged bleeding from wound, edema, and I have even heard heart arrythmias were present in the most severe documented envenomation. The sheer inefficiency of the rear-fanged venom delivery system is it's biggest detriment, however. No fatalities on record. Does this answer your question? If you want a long research article on the Duvenoy's (venom gland) secretions of several rear-fanged species, including Hydrodynastes gigas (FWC) send me your e-mail address. Know the venom, but most importantly know your snake. Happy herping!
