Any foods I can feed with a syringe?

bmulcahy Mar 12, 2007 11:28 AM

My Leopard is getting old and the end is near. He doesn't eat anymore. I give him water daily on a q-tip. Is there anything I could feed through a syringe? Thanks in advance.

How old is your leopard?

You can always give baby food mixed with some water and a little bit of calcium powder. You can also use Hills Science Diet A/D which is a feline/canine food that is made to be fed through a syringe and is available from your veterinarian. There is also a recipe from Marica at Golden Gate Geckos for a slurry that contains pedialyte, baby food, bananas, ensure and some other things...I dont remember the specific amounts of each thing, but i have it saved on my computer and will post it later. Or you can try and see if its on goldengategeckos website.

However, if your gecko is waning to the point where he cannot eat or drink on his own then you have to think that the quality of life is pretty far gone and the best thing at this point might be humane euthanasia. I am a vet technician myself and always try to think of it as the last great act of kindness we can give to our pets

I do agree with what was said before. You could also mash up whatever you feed mealies, crix silkworms, or all of them and feed through a syringe if it's mushed well enough. Good luck and sorry to hear about your guy. How old is he?

Thanks for the advice. I have been thinking of peacefully putting him to sleep. I am not sure how old he is. I got him as an adult 4 years ago when I took him from a family that didn't want him. He has had a good life in my class. His partner died about a month ago and he has been blind for the last few months.I had posted earlier about shedding every week and the sheds eventually closed his eyes. I just want what is best for him!

Thanks!
