Hypo Nics and Genetics

ballyhoo1887 Mar 12, 2007 10:37 PM

I was wondering, if I bred a hypo Nicaraguan Boa to a normal would all of the offspring be het for hypo? I was under the impression that hypomelanism in boas was different than in other snake. If anyone could explain that would be great. Thanks,

-Mack

Its not a recessive gene , it is co-dom/dominant ... on average you would end up with about half the litter being hypo and the rest would be normals if you bred a co-dom hypo to the normal ... if you bred a dominant hypo to a normal then all of the offspring would be hypo ... hope this helps .. good luck !!!

Hypo in boas isn't the same thing as with other animals (i.e., ball pythons) where hypo is a "het" gene. Also, would the hypo nic be bred to a normal colombian or a normal nic?

My bad, I should have clarified...I'll be breeding a hypo Nic to a normal Nic. If I do this, then the worst case scenario (ideally speaking) would be that I would come out with half normal and half hypo babies? Thanks,

Theoretically, based on mendelian segregation patterns, the expected ratio would be 50:50 (Hypo:Normal). However, as this is a seperate event for each embryo youl could end up with all normal, or all hypo, or various ratios of each. However, as stated, the expected ratio is 50:50.

Thanks for the responses...this is random, but I also noticed that you're a professor at NC State. I'm a bio major at UNCW right now, and I'm trying to transfer to state next semester. Small world...
