Vivarium

atherisquamigera Mar 13, 2007 04:19 PM

Does anyone keep their BRBs in a vivarium? I have a 6 ft cage that I am trying to turn into a vivarium with a large pool and plants that like the same humidity and temp. I got a special filter for the water (it's made to clean out poop and urine). I'll post pics when it's done, but I was wondering why no one else uses vivariums for their snakes.(a viv is a tank that is pretty much a self contained ecosystem) I know poop is a problem, but its a problem in normal cages too, and waste fertilizes plants. Is it just because it's too much time and money to set up and maintain?

Cost and maintainance is a big issue. We have 10 snakes permanently at our residence, and to make each of them a Viv would be impracticle. Also, I would be worried about making a mistake in plant choice, or have some sort of mold start growing and cause problems for the snake. Also, I could imagine my snakes ruining any plant I put in their enclosure, except for any large trees. For me, its easier and safer for my animals to give them housing without all the bells and whistles. We use coconut husk for our BRBs and newspaper for our BCI's. They seem happy with just the basics; a place to climb, a place to hide, and a place to soak.

Im part of the manitoban herp society, and there is a member who has a decked out vivarium for his dart frogs. I asked if its a pain to clean out, and heres what he said

"There is no cleaning involved, except the feeding dish. There is natural filtration with the waterfalls and plant roots. Also, everything biodegrades like a natural environment. In a set up like that, it is very important not to over stock with animals. I have had this set up for six months or more already, and a 50gal vivarium can hold six frogs without any cleaning ever."
