Update on trembling gecko

Buffysmom Mar 13, 2007 06:34 PM

The vet gave us calcium drops, but the problem got worse while her calcium sacks got HUGE. We now believe it's a problem with her for some reason, not being able to metabolize the calcium she's getting any more. So she got the first of a lifetime of twice-monthly calcitonin shots to help her use her calcium.
5 days later her trembling has nearly completely stopped. Unfortunately, her bottom jaw got quite soft while we were figuring out the problem & she is having great difficulty shutting her mouth at all now. We are hoping the calcium will head to her bones & help them rebound somewhat, aiding her jaw.

was the gecko getting enough D3? wouldn't a UVB light help with the metabolization?

That's a good question, although hard to assess. My understanding is that cresties, as a nocturnal species, don't require UV light in their enclosures. My guess is this is the result of her being a breeder for a pet shop for I don't know how many years. Or, it's just a fluke thing that happens sometimes.
I read in Reptiles last month about a tortoise with the same problem. In fact, that article triggered me to think of this as a possible explanation for my Peek's continued deterioration despite getting plenty of calcium & have huge calcium sacks.

That's just terrible, sorry to hear about your girl. Seems shes just not absorbing it (the calcium)
I agree with our other buddy who posted, more Vitimin D would help her absorb you would think.

I sure hope there is much improvement, let us knwo how she does.

She's only had the first of a lifetime of Calcitonin injections every 2 weeks, but the improvement is remarkable! She is barely trembling at all anymore. Before she was falling off things becuase her little legs just wouldn't work. Also her jaw has regained some control, it had gotten rubbery very fast & she was no longer able to close it or really control it. Now she can close it sometimes. All this in one week! I'm thrilled we found a solution, albeit an extremely expensive one- $40 every 2 weeks.
