Snow bulls cuddling...

KJUN Mar 14, 2007 01:05 PM

The lighting was bad, but I thought this shot was worth posting, anyway. I looked in the cage, and saw these two bulls in one big ball just laying there. I guess she tried to crawl away, so he constricted her. Either way, it made me laugh. Every time she'd twitch her tail, he'd bit both of their tails....lol.

...and here is a close-up. Just plain gross looking!

This guy bred her, and imeediately started courting her again. They hooked up a second time almost immediately. Repeat for a third time. I managed to catch them in time to sepearate them before he even could try for a forth. Amazing breeder.

I have two pair of adult bulls that are breeding age - I stick in the male, he goes wild over her, but I never see any copulation. Any idea why not? I usually leave them in for a few days - I usually watch for a few minutes at a time.

The males do tend to be aggressive breeders, but I never saw that male breed for the first two years he gave me offspring. They'll copulate for 15-60 minutes, but I think the females will resist for a long time. Often, I'll leave them over night together when they are courting vigourously.

Have you got good eggs from the females yet, or is this the first year you are trying? If the female is not receptive, she may not be ovulating (too early or too late) or too young/small. How big is she, and how long has it been since you warmed them up from brumation? Have the females shed? If so, when - and how long after brumation was it?

Both pairs are right at 3 years old, maybe a few months shy of that. Both females are large - 5' plus and one female is over 6 and as big as my forearm. Everyone has eaten well since I brought them out of brumation at the end of Feb - the females have eaten WAY more, and all have shed.

This is my first time attempting to breed them.

Thanks!

They sound like adults, and there shouldn't be any problems with them breeding unless your 6' one is too obese. But, heck, don't stress yet. I brought mine up a couple of weeks before you, and I have only had one female receptive to males yet. You are still early. I'm surprised they have all shed already, though. If they shed TOO soon after being warmed up, the first shed may NOT indicate ovulation is about to happen.

Just keep trying every few days.
