Boaphiles Sagging?

drasticplastic Mar 14, 2007 01:27 PM

Has anyone encountered any sagging in their boaphiles since they have had them? I have two boaphiles now and if I really look closely I can see the middle of the cage sag just a little. If you're not really staring at it you won't see it. It doesn't bother me one bit, I'm planning on getting more boaphiles pretty soon and I just want to make sure they will hold up in the years to come. (no disrespect to Jeff at all, I love your cages.....and I'm not trying to be "a troublemaker". lol)

I have a bunch of them, some are about 5 years old, never had any sag. Make sure they are supported, if they are on something that sags, then they might. Craig kade

Putting them on top of a table that doesn't support the whole bottom, or putting something on top of them that puts weight in the center will cause them to sag.

I'm assuming you mean just the top or just the bottom of the cage.

If I run a large level over the top or the inside of my cages there are points in the centers that do not meet the level, the frame of the cage is fine, but I do know what you are talking about.
I don't think it will cause any harm though.

When you consider other companys whose cages break at the seems or sag in the front, crack or whatever else, the Boaphiles really hold up well.

drasticplastic Mar 14, 2007 01:53 PM

I agree with the fact they hold up better compared to other brands of cages that I've had in the past, I love the boaphile cages and I plan to get more in the future. My cages are on top of a computer desk that is 47 inches in length, so my cages hang 1/2 inch on both sides, I really don't think that's enough to do any damage right now but I am in the process of building a table to replace the desk.

diggy415 Mar 14, 2007 10:09 PM

i have mine setting on a bureau and it hangs 1/2" on the sides and some on the back, mine sags to right after where the radient heat panel is and i figured that was the reason, i noticed it when i dusted it, nothing to complain about, but will also replace it with a more steady table before i add up! i take it there is no weight limit ontop of eachother as long as they are cages and not say tanks? how high can you stack, ive seen 4 so far.

I have a stack of 4 421Ds and one 421T. That's as high as I will go. I like them up off the floor, and I have to use a step stool as it is to reach the top cage.

rainbowsrus Mar 14, 2007 10:48 PM

I have two stacks of 6 each. The roller bases I built bring them up about 5 inches so just under 6' tall. Then again, I'm 6'1" so the upper cage is not a problem for me.

Every instance when I have ever had someone call about "sagging" or pinching of doors it has always been one of two problems;

1. This is not an issue of sagging but of the bottom being pushed up by something that the cage is resting upon. This can be from an uneven floor, the bottom cage on a stack on thick carpeting, a cabinet that the cage extends beyond the edges of, or stacking the cage on another cage of an unequal footprint. The cages resting on cages of the same size footprint never "sag" and those doors never bind. A cage sitting on a dresser that is smaller than the cage can actually push upward on the bottom of the door causing the door to bind. A heat pad used under the cage can also push up on the bottom of the cage causing binding issues with the door. Full perimeter support is needed at the bottom of the cage. This support must be both in length and the depth of the cage. The fact that many floors are not very flat and that carpet can push up on the bottom cage, is one of the biggest reasons we began offering our pedestals.

2. The other instance is when something other than what is recommended is placed on top of the cage. The cage is not intended to ever support anything other than a cage of the same size footprint. This is detailed on the web site. The top of the cage will hold itself up for at least six and a half years as those are the oldest Boaphile Cages out there, and I have been using them all that time. Twelve of them in total in two stacks without any sagging. They were actually made using only 1/8" thick material which is half what we use today. The bottom of each cage with the weight of whatever animals you put in the cage is held up by the unique engineering and design that we originated nearly seven years ago now. The door is the secret. That third hinge in the center of the door is what holds the bottom up, at the front where door could pinch as they do on many other cages. We even have some folks that have put sand in as a substraight who have not had sagging issues.

As always, I have my phone with me all day, every day, and am happy to talk with anyone with any questions before and after the sale. (507) 263-7289.

Don't put anything too heavy on the middle top of the cage. The sides provide lots of support but not the middle of a large cage. Also be sure the support underneath is very solid. I saw some slight sagging when I attempted to put a heavy figurine on top of my cage. Removed the figurine and problem solved!

..... 80 of the Boaphile 421's and I have had no problems with any of them at all. I think it all has to do with the base that you sit the cages on. If your base is even a 1/2" short on each end, meaning you are sitting them on a 47" long table you will have a sagging or pinch issue. I stack the cages 6 levels high and still do not have any problems with the bottom cages. Below is a picture of the rolling pedestals that I have built for them. It keeps them up off the floor and still allows me to work the top cage by stepping on a short step stool.

Here is a pic of them before I added in the center isle and even put Boas in them. I plan to order another 24 and double up my center isle this year.
I am sure once you get them on a level surface the length of the cage, you will have no more problems.

Take care,

I know you have posted pics of your room before, but I never get tired of looking at it. I got my cages off the computer desk and are not on a completely flat table that I built with more than enough room to hold the footprint of the cage. Thanks for your input.

Slithering_Serpents Mar 15, 2007 02:37 PM

I have been admiring your handywork here on this rolling base for boaphile stacks. I can see how most of it's made by just looking at the photo. I hope I can make some when I have oodles of boaphiles too. I love your snake room!

Mike,

That rooms looks awesome!! You did a good job from what I can see. I bet you are loving the new place. Those Boaphiles sure look good like that. I bet that will be one breeding machine. I can imagine those will be full of some Killer Paradims soon. I don't know if there is a better LOOKING cage out there. Those are SHARP.

Long time no chat,

Later, Jeremy
