Random Question

nile_keepr Mar 14, 2007 01:59 PM

This is completely random, absolutely off the wall craziness that I was just curious about, would never put into motion to test.

Has anyone ever housed a juvenile crocodilian with a juvenile monitor species before?

I was thinking of the larger varieties (Nile X A. Alligator) but I was thinking maybe someone has kept a dwarf caiman or something with one of the monitor species.

I realize these animals would be competition in nature and possibly attempt to consume one another, but if both were raised from a young age in the others company, were offered food to the point where they would not desire to attack/consume their cagemate because of hunger, and remained at similar sizes throughout their time together, what do you think the result would be?

I think I already know, but I figured Id ask.

Just for the fun of it

A friend of mine keeps adult waters(breeding pair)(a clutch just hatched) in with alligators. Has for a several years.

Not that I would recomend such a thing. The problem is this, he as an understanding of what he is doing, most don't. Many think because it can or has been done, its OK to do it. Which is wrong and with varanids, its really wrong as most do not understand how to keep one alive muchless work out group and multiple species complications.

I often get requests for 2.3 of this or that. I get them from people who have never kept a monitor. I find that odd. Not that your asking, but I recomend, taking baby steps and going from there. Cheers

Don't know about has it happened but it reminds me of folks trying to set up a 'MONSTER' fish tank.
If you can match species with water parameters and all then you have the whole problem of "if it fits in their mouth they will eat it"
And even if you get it all set up fine all of a sudden someone goes out and eats someone. Stuff happens.

Crocodilian have pretty big mouths.

I guess I wonder why you (not you you but a generic you) would want to try it.

Not really a desire to try it.

I was thinking about monitors, and as often happens to me, Niles came to mind.

It seemed to me that in nature, as natives in Africa and migrants in Florida, they have competition from a large crocodillian and yet seem to survive. Suddenly just wondered if anyone had ever tried keeping em before and *poof* a random question is born!

I can imagine it would only work on a case by case basis and, personally, thats just a few too many mouths full of teeth for me to be interested in.

Feeding time in that water/gator cage must be a hell of a thing to see.
