largest ball python

ctvincent Mar 14, 2007 03:47 PM

Anyone have a ball python 6'or larger? One of Ionides' books shows a man holding a large ball paython that looked more like an African Rock. It was however a ball python.

I haven't seen any the size of a rock. Our oldest ball is 18 years old and she isn't even 6'. Are you sure the guy holding it wasn't a pygmy? Snakes tend to look bigger when being held by pygmies!

that the verified record is a 6'6" female but I've never seen the pics and I have no idea who recorded it. I remember that I used to have a field guide when I was a kid that claimed that Royal Pythons maxed out at 10'. The largest ball I've ever seen was a little over 5'. You have to take those older books with a grain of salt. 40' anacondas, 31' retics etc. etc.

But it's not easy to measure them, as they are strong, and never straighten out.
Their heads are huge, and that's what stands out the most on a large, old ball python.
Here's the only pic I have now of one of my larger ones taken about three years ago... But now, I have a few that are much older/larger then her.

I have 6 or 7 between the 5-6ft range. This is one of the largest I have. She is as thick as a liter bottle of soda. This pic was taken on a lazyboy sectional that has 5ft cushions.

Awe. She looks like a sweet old girl. Does she have a fave spot to hang out?

Brings new meaning to lapsnake...

What is the best setup to house a snake of this age & size?

here's a trick that I use to measure mine:
get a loooong piece of string. if you have two people do this its easier but you can do it by yourself too. put the end of the string on the snake's head(or near it, you get the idea), and then just roll out the string following the snake's spine, and mark where the snake ends. then, straighten the string and measure against a measuring tape.

Have any that large?

I find it almost hard to believe. My 2 oldest females are definately pushing 6 feet, and are just being bred for the first time this year. I've seen the pair of them much on some very sizeable rats.

My biggest is only a little over 5 feet... Since the average is supposed to be 4.5, makes sense to find so few over 6 feet... :P
