ballfreak Mar 14, 2007 03:51 PM

these are my second time breeder rats. i have 1.3 in this tub and a few days ago one of the females had babies today i went to look and noticed some new babies in a different area of the cage? but i see only one mother nursing so i removed the other two and left her alone with her babies. when i removed the others i noticed six dead babies? they looked like they were dead at birth. any good reasons?

could be several reasons, i've had that too also moms in labor dying without finishing, its a fact of life and i thought maybe she layed on them during it all.

My personal take on it is that often with new moms there are losses. Some rats clean up (eat the dead) and some don't ( and you find them) Sometimes new moms do this and sometimes burned out moms. I tend to leave moms in groups and they group raise pups. One might hog them the first day or two but then she shares.
