I want to ask a question

oceanfairy21 Mar 14, 2007 05:12 PM

Why is color so important?

This isn't to upset anyone, I want to know people's opinions on color, and why its so important to them.

To me, it doesn't matter. They're all cute and they all deserve good homes with good "parents" I could care less if my dragon was dull gray (its not. She's "normal" or bright purple. It'd still be Morwyn.

I'm just curious

I would guess it's along the same lines as any other show-pet type animal...like how some people prefer only dog breeds that are AKC registered and have 'show' markings, while others don't care if their pup has 3 legs and green fur.
I think it would be neat to own a dragon with fantastic colours, but I'm just as happy with my 'normal' beardie too. In much the same way that I love my 'wall-eyed' cat just as much (well, more actually since she's mine) as my best friends purebred Ragdoll cat, who is gloriously beautiful. I guess a lot of it depends on if you like to show off your animals.
It's an interesting question tho

Very good question. I too would have to say it would be because everyone is always in competition with themselves and they think they have something bigger and better, so that makes them bigger and better, then the everyone else. It just like everyday life. haha....I personally don't care. Yea i think ones with color are very hot but i am not stressing about it in anyway.

My personal opinion is that "normals" or cross "normals" are hardier. I think there is less "close breeding" (notice I didn't say in breeding). High color dragons are bred for one thing only. Color. The old saying is that people buy with their eyes not their brains. Some will say that they buy for color because they want to breed them. But, this is silly, there are already way too many people breeding dragons now. The result of this is dragons getting pushed into the market and into unsuitable homes. There is already too much tragedy now, for novices or upstarts to breed dragons.

My opinion, if you want a great friend, adopt a rescued dragon.

Why color is important.

One is that although all dragons are awesome, to some people the colorfull ones just plain and simple look more appealing to them. They are attracted to the colors. And its not just in beardies, it goes like that for just about every animal in the pet industry. From fish to birds, cats, dogs, horses, almost all reptiles.

Another thing is marketing and just the scense of having something new or rare. Imagine if everyone drove around in a plain grey car. And for a while thats all everyone had. then all of a sudden someone drives by in a bright red car. Everyone would want that bright red car. It goes like that in reptiles and in a lot of other idustries, especially electronics, everyone wants the latest and greatest.

Another reason , is genetics. Most breeders are like this. If you cross a normal dragon to a normal dragon all you get is normal dragons. Which are cool too , but can get borring. But if you cross a red dragon to an orange dragon the possibilities are endless. you never know what youre going to get untill the day it hatches. And even then you get to watch it grow and become more intense in color. You can cross hypos into a line, translucents, oranges reds yellows anyhting really. It is just plain fun and exciting.

anyways just some of my thoughts

ok. I feel ya. But.
you said boring. Do you mean just boring to look at colorwise? at least i hope thats what you mean. I can watch my dragon play (as long as she's up ) for quite some time. I think that's why I don't care about color. I like watching her and her personality.

nathan23 Mar 14, 2007 10:02 PM

yeah boring colorwise, because all the dragons tend to look similar. But if you add colored dragons to the mix, the possibilities are endless.

yeah. i'm glad people responded and i can't wait to read other peoples answers its just something that got me thinkin!

We own 7 dragons so far and each one has different coloring. W e have one thats just plain, I enjoy watching them change colors with each shed. "It's like a box of chocolate, you never know what your gonna get." Our 3rd dragon (Zabaa) is the most colorful, she is red/citrus. She started out a dark brick and after a couple of sheds is was tangerine looking even on her spikes with like a jaudice yellow on her head. Her lips shed bright yellow, looked like someone put lipstick on her. She is now 18 1/4 inches long and over 500 grams (14 months old). She's loves to be held and sung too! Will have to post old & new pics as soon as I remember how! The other's are loved just as much and each one is unique in it's own little way.

I don't think it is important at all. I pick bd's because I like their colors. But there is no medical reason at all why you would chose a colored one over a regular one. Not the bright colors of a healthy dragon can be an indicator of how it is feeling (i.e. if heat and uv are right) but really a trained eye can see that in even a "bland" dragon.
