constant cage climbing

kstigile Mar 14, 2007 05:14 PM

hello again all! i am writing because i am going out of my mind with the constant cage climbing of my 3 new uros (which, after a ton of reading, i do believe are WC animals). right now, until the new cage is done being built, they are in a 40B tank (yes, too small, i know, but it is very temporary). the basking spot is 122-125, cool side about 80, 10.uvb, they eat dried beans/lentils, escarole, chickory and bok choy as the staple veggies. 3 sides of the tank are completely covered. 3 hides, all small and wide. the have about 2 inches of sand and slate rocks.
ok, so the problem is that from the moment they wake up until about 45 mins after lights off, all they do is cage climb. i have been home sick from work today, and have really been able to observe this all day. i notice it in the evenings when i am home usually, and all morning when i am getting ready for work, but apparently this is an all day thing. and let me tell you, it drives me INSANE!! little nails all day on the glass at 900mph...
so what do i do? any ideas on why this is happening? i thought about trying to cover the other side of the tank, but they climb all over the place, not just the front of the tank. i was thinking that if they are WC, that they might be trying to figure out the whole cage thing, but its been almost 2 weeks of this craziness. the new tank should be done this weekend, and i actually modified the walls (using tileboard instead of just paint) because i was worried about them scratching so much. so if anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated. i was considering today chopping off little feet, but i think that MIGHT not be the right way to go lol. thanks in advance!

Get used to it... you can't stop it.

Part of the problem is the cage size. As soon as your new one is done (which is hopefully soon), you may find *some* of the scratching subsides - especially if the new cage is really big and properly heated.

i figured it was partly cage size. the new cage is going to be 4x3x2, so im hoping that will make a big difference. as far as heated, im pretty sure i have that figured out. im doing 2 basking spots (one in each front corner), and it will have plenty of "regular" light, as well as the uvb. hopefully we will have the cage done saturday, so i guess i will deal with it until then. thanks guys!

Just know that it may not stop even then. But a big cage MIGHT help.

Haha, that's so true. My male runs on the glass, (i use papertowels and he moves them) just to run on the glass, and all you hear it scratching while he runs for about 1/2 hr incriments every so often. So he's right it doesn't always tend to ever stop. LOL! They are the cutest little things though and by far my fav. lizard.
