Not eating

kohr Mar 15, 2007 02:00 PM

I have 2 young Leopard Geckos in one of my enclosure 1 male and 1 female each around 20 grams. The temperatures in the enclosure are within the ideal range and well nothing is any different than any of my other enclosures where I have Leopard Geckos that are doing great.

The problems are they are not eating well, I can only seem to get the female to eat an occasional wax worm, and their fecal looks like it’s not completely undigested. I took a fecal sample to the vet and they told me they didn't find any parasites or coccidia. I am not sure what to do now, Any suggestions?

I think you need to raise the temperature in the cage. What's the temperature at the basking site? It should be at least 90 degree directly under the heat lamp; this should raise the rest of the cage temperature to between 75-80 degree which is perfect.

You have eliminated Parasites & Coccidiosis, so unfortunatly that leaves Cryptosporidiosis. From what your describing, this sounds like what could be the problem. Crypto is also the nastiest parasitic disease Leos can get & the hardest to cure the of.
What I would do first is seperate the suspicious animals from the rest of your geckos, as in put there cage in a seperate room. Crypto spreads like wild fire. Besure to thourghly disinfect your hands between cages when doing your maintenance. Do the sick individuals last & rubber gloves are probably not a bad idea.
Seacond is take another fecal sample to the vet & request it be tested for Crypto. Often times the fecal float test that most vets do can't detect Crypto, so it will have to be sent out to a lab for further test.
Good luck & I really hope this isn't what your problem is.

I have to say unfortunatley i agree with Csherps here and it doesn't sound to good.

Although crypto definately could be the culprit and i recomend having a fecal sample sent out to the lab to rule that out or in, you also may want to try seperating the leos from each other. The stress could be affecting the appetite, as could improper temps. The temps you are measuring, what type of device are you using to measure them? Is it digital? Are you measuring the air temps or the substrate temps? Sometimes people are measuring the air temps, which has little affect on the leo, you want to get a nice spot of the substrate floor up to 88-92degreesF.

If the temps are perfect on the substrate then i would be more inclined to think of crypto. Either way, have a sample sent out to check.

Good luck

just an FYI...if you choose to pursue the Crypto then you will have to do several fecal tests...in "The herptoculture of the leopard gecko" it is recomended to test 3 different stool samples over a 7-10day period. Because the parasite sheds intermittently it may not be found in one sample but the animal could still be positive.

Is the male constantly pestering the female to mate? If so then she can be stressed out. Try putting them in separate enclosures and see if they start eating.
