First cruise of 2007 in CA

metalpest Mar 16, 2007 01:33 AM

Cruised my local area (Lancaster CA) for the first time this year last night, temps in the mid to upper 60s. Total count: 7 AOR, 8 DOR. 3 gophers, one southern pacific, the rest mojave rattlers. Most were babies from last year. One mojave was a little older, and had a heck of a rattle for his size: 10 segments. The southern was the highlight of the trip for us, found just outside of their typical habitat not far from a mojave. They are known to venture down into the desert and even hybridize with mojaves, but this is only the second we have seen in "mojave territory". Normally, we spot them up in the hills in the forest, where no mojaves are to be found.

Enjoy!

Hey Metal,
Reako and I were thinking about going out that way Tuesday night, but I ended up having to work! I would like to find some longnoses and some kings. However I still love those Mojaves!
It's good to see this crappy winter leaving finally.
The three of us should meet up one of these nights and do a little crusing. We usually hit up 110th and 170th.

Stay safe:

hit 110 and 170 tonight, nothing but DOR. What Id really like to do is explore new areas this year, find some sidewinders and other cool snakes.

That sounds even better. I was thinking about hitting jawbone canyon sometime soon! The herp society that we belong to is heading out to Darwin falls in a few weeks. I just find it hard to go out looking with groups of people.

Hope to talk with ya soon!

Yeah, it is tough, but 3 people shouldn't be too bad. Just back from Darwin and we had a decent night road cruising (Sidewinder, Great Basin Gopher, Longnose and Lyre Snake). Metalpest is right, it's definitely time to get out there. The weather report for Darwin said mid 80's, but when we got out there it felt like it was pushin 100! As w/ most of your nights Jason, stuff started coming out late (after 10pm). Randy (pres of LA SWHS Chapter went out 3-16 w/ his son in Palmdale and found 16 snakes, however where they go is alot of DOR). I think it's timing over there. Stuff seems to be out alot earlier.

We might have to hit Borrego in two weeks, I hope to see some of those! We will definatly be in the whitewater area, hope to see lots of critters that we don't get here in lancaster
