8 eggs so far today...

-ryan- Mar 17, 2007 01:08 AM

Nothing fertile, because I didn't breed them, but if you keep them healthy they'll poop out eggs regardless. Kinda like chickens. If they're healthy, female uromastyx will produce eggs.

I was suprised to see who all the eggs came from today. It was actually my uromastyx that I rescued a few years back. She was in the worst shape you could imagine! If there are any old-timers here, you might remember her. I took her from a guy that was keeping her (a fully grown female mali) in a 10 gallon tank with no top, substrate, no real food (except table scraps) a broken heat rock, her own filth, and no lighting at all. From the looks of the third degree burns on her back, it appeared as though she had had a heat lamp in the recent past (that had fallen on her). She still has the scars on her back. One large white patch that covers a good portion of her back, and some smaller ones as well. She's lucky the light didn't destroy her internal organs.

Anyways, besides the burns (which were easy enough to treat), she had even bigger problems. She had liver disease.

The odds were stacked against her, but I gave her a chance anyways and put her in good care. 150f basking spot, some nice dirt to dig in so she can get to higher humidities (dehydration is the primary cause of renal issues), and all the food she can eat.

It's all worked miracles on her. The two best reptile veterinarians in the area told me that there was nothing they could do for her, and that was about three years ago now.

I'm so proud of fat sam.

She's still, well, very fat! But I've tried to get her to lose weight, and I'm actually pretty sure it's more related to water retention due to some of the issues she has had.

I'll have to post some pics sometime in the near future. Once I can find a camera.

It was an exciting day yesterday between Sam laying eggs and my yearling Ball Python coming out of his 4-5 month fast. He was an early bloomer and sure enough when november rolled around, he had sperm plugs and didn't want anything to do with his food. He's a fun snake, but I'm not as interested in snakes as I am tortoises and uros.

I'll tell fat Sam you said hi

sperm plugs!? now there is a thought! I will stick to my Uros and torts as well thank you! lol.

I look forward to those pictures of Fat Sam and others in the future!

Found a few more yesterday, and I'm still looking.

Since she's never laid eggs for me, I'm thinking about trying to schedule her a vet appointment to make sure there are no more eggs left inside of her.
