Pretty girl... and temp questions

Buggzter Mar 17, 2007 08:40 AM

Dawn is on FIRE!!!!!!!! She's bright orangy/red, and she's getting fat... WE'RE HAVNING EGGS!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can hardly wait... Just a few more weeks...

Question: do warmer temps bring more girls or more boys? I've got the incubator to be around 85-87, and also at 81 at good reliability... any clues? I'd like to have more boys I think, since people think they are prettier, tho I'd like a couple girls so Spike can have some company in another year... Thanks ppl!

(ps the first pic is of dawn a week or so after we got her, the second is today, and the third is last weekend)

There is no true temp dependent sex determination studies done with collared lizards. I know on one particular site someone had mentioned it, but I know from an old friend who kept pretty precise records, that he seen no difference in rations.

Leopard Geckos...

Typically in lizards cooler temps bring more females, warmer more males. I know of at least one old study in which when the warmest extremes were reached, the ration swayed toward females again, although these females were very "male" in personality. They were termed, "hot" females. They were not easy to breed because they would not hardly tolerate the males.

I believe there are also other reptilians that are just the opposite. I believe tortoises and alligators may be the case. It has been too long.

To make a long story short. I think it would be good if someone with several collares (let's just say Eve for example) would keep temp records and sex ratios. Perhaps we could settle this.

;O)

Wow. I really should proof read my work.

ah well.

I should also say, this is old information. I have no idea what new claims have been or studies released. I claim no expertise in this area. I also have not kept more than 2 collareds for some time. Eve's powers of persuasion are amazing. I think I've been brain washed.

Higher temps bring the males, lower the females, but not much data , your right Johneee.

I have not ever had the chance to study it because I keep a moderate temp of 84, maybe sometimes going to 86 but not higher or that much lower. Never wanted to stay real high for nay length of time or Low.

I do get more boys at my moderate temps???? So that's my findings on my incubation.

Thanks for the info (of lack there of lol!)... I think I'll try the 81 degree temp, since my house was a bit on the cooler side that day at that temp. Then, as it fluctuates higher from warmer days (Florida summer is getting close... yuck! but good for incubation lol!), I won't worry about it getting too low...

As for my fiance, he says "she doesn't have any eggs in her" since he can't feel them. I laughed! It's only a week since she started to develope colors, and she's getting fatter each day - the eggs need more time to develope! Sheesh! It's been years since he's done any breeding, and it wasn't collareds. I've just done as much research as I can... lol! As if I knew anything...

Thanks again you two! I can hardly wait to see my growing grandlizards...
