Oldest Hognose (on rodents)in Captivity?

copperhead13 Mar 17, 2007 09:21 AM

In responce to this post by Tom: "My experience has been that the parents died at 2.5 to 3 years old on mice only diet. After doing a necropsy it was found that the intestinal walls were lined with undigested hair that basically starved them to death even though they continued to eat till the day they died" What age are rodent eating hogs attaining in captivity by others?

No ref. to age, but I find mouse hair in my easterns poo. After hearing about this months ago, I started paying attention, and noticed that my easterns are passing the hair.

I have a 3.5 yr. old female eastern that was c/b.She has never eaten anything but rodents however,I've always fed her hairless. When she was small she ate pink mice of various sizes in proportion to her size. She now ears rat pups.So far no problems. Jeff

Do the rat pups have any hair?

Rat pups have some hair to varying degrees depending on when they were pulled.

I have a female going on 3 years who has eaten only rodents. Mostly she eats fuzzy rat pups now, but I still give her pinky rats or even hopper mice (definitely furred) depending on what I have available.

Still going strong on a diet of hairless mice, fuzzies, and the occasional weaned mouse.

Hi,
My facility has housed an adult dusty phase western hognose female for 11 years. She was aquired as an adult in 1995 and has been fed exclusively on rodents the entire time. Unfortunately her feeding history before 1995 is unknown.

Hope this helps.

I have a male Western we purchased at Crutchfields in 1993 when it was quite small. It's never eaten anything but unscented rodents and was in a school classroom for many years. It developed a cloudy eye (cataract?) about 5 years ago.
