popping 30 girls,1male???

buddyboat Mar 17, 2007 10:38 AM

Hello, I just popped my baby boas and got 30 girls and 1 male.

Sure, I'm new at popping snakes, I watched a video on popping corn snakes and it looked pretty easy.

I didn't start too close to the vent when I started rolling my thumb.

My one male popped no problem.

The snakes are 14 days old today.

Anyone ever have mostly one sex of babies like this???

Thanks

I think your just not using enough pressure. Give it another try, and see if you can find someone to double check them to make sure.

Have you ever used the rolling method? Just roll your index finder from above the vent to past it, you will feel the hemipenes roll(pop) from under your finger/ they feel like peas and it takes practice to feel it but its better than open type popping i believe to someone who is new at it like me.

experienced with spur sexing or probing to check your results. Probing by a very experienced individual is still the most accurate way to quickly determine the sex of boas.

just slide your finger from the vent down toward the tip of the tail using light pressure if it is a male you will feel two bumps if not it is a female. Use your known male for referance. Hope this helps Vinnie

Definitely the easiest, most accurate method I have found. Like Vinnie said, hold the tail between your index finger and thumb top and bottom (I usually do it with my index finger on top and thumb on bottom), and slide them backwards towards the tail tip while applying light pressure. You will feel two little bumps, like BB's on the males an inch or two down but nothing on the females. It's very easy to do, very accurate and causes no or very little stress on the snake with no chance of prolapses or perforated sheaths. Oh yeah, you can do it over and over too for lots of practice.

NO NEED at all.....never rolled them???? Thats what I call it, 100% accurate......just firml;y but gently run yuor fingers over the bottom of the tail till you feel two bumps 1/3-1/2 the way down from vent to the tail....if you feel two bumps, a boy, if not ry again to make sure, and a girl.....no need to pop or probe baby boas....

Hey, thanks for the help.

I applied a little more pressure and ended up with 16 males and 15 females.

As far as feeling for the 2 lumps, I will keep practicing. My fingers aren't as sensitive as I would like.

Thanks again !
