Outdoor Security

aggdds Mar 17, 2007 12:03 PM

I was just curious about what security precautions people take who keep valuable tortoises in outside pens.

Meter readers........yardmen.........anyone who finds out you own a tortoise, all seem to be potential sources of tortoise theft.

I have been given two aldabras, not yet in my possesion, and I am really worried about security given the value of these guys.

Any thoughts?? Tortoise Lo-Jack?

Putting up security cameras is always a good idea. Or if you can't afford that, at least put up signs that you have security cameras. Lock fences/gates, maybe even get those little alarms that go on either side of something and if the connection is broken they make noise. Also, having the tortoises microchipped and have photographs of them from several angles along with top and bottom views, close ups of their faces. That way if they are stolen and recovered you have proof they are yours. I wonder if you could put some kind of gps tracking device on them too if you were really worried about theft or escapes.
