underwater fake rock wall

jmadams Mar 17, 2007 12:30 PM

Can anyone point me in the right direction for underwater fake rock walls. I want to make my fly river turtle tank very natural and think three sides and some out cropings would be nice, but have only made any for normal vivs, not under water. Maybe some fish keeper websites? I tried looking but came up blank. TIA.

Here's a good one. A large number of threads on builing backgrounds. My only concern with your project might be the roughness of the background and the soft shell of the fly river.

The softness of the shell was my only concern as well. I was thinking of making it look rough, but making it very smooth and soft, like foam latex. I have thought going the latex route, but have never worked with it and think its expensive. Thanks for the link. I'll check that out.

Another use here could be epoxy. Going with a heavy epoxy coat could smooth out the cement. However, it would add a lot to the price.

Hi Chris,

Great link. Some really good background and acrylic fabrication tips. Have been looking for some of this information for ages.

Thanks again.

The fish hobbyists are really a great resource of information and I enjoy reading through the archives of that site when I have time.

Are you still living in the same house? Are you going to build some cages for your snake room?

You're right, those forums are great.

Still in the same ..tiny... house.

Am using a combination of storage boxes/racks and a few fibreglass/plastic vivs. Planning to make some vivs that will fit the racks, to give me the best of both worlds.

Going to try to knock up the first one tomorrow. Will post some pictures for critique when it's done!

Cheers

Mark
