stubborn eater

teaspoon Mar 17, 2007 12:53 PM

I've had my adult amazon for two and a half months now and shes only eaten once. Otherwise, she seems healthy. I've offerred her mice nearly every week, and tried both day and night. I tried rubbing the mouse with a piece of catfish(I heard that that works). She'll stike sometimes and once she even constricted the mouse, but did not eat it.
Does anyone have tips for a stubborn eater? I think that she is wild caught. What do amazon tree boas eat in the wild? tree frogs maybe? Should I try something besides mice?

I had a lot of trouble gettin mine to eat. I tried everything. Eventually i just left the pinkie sitting really close to where ever he was at the time. it was always less then an inch away. I left it overnight and when i checked the next morning the pinkie was gone. You also wanna make sure all your temps are right and humidity. That will make a big difference. Get a care sheet and go by it all the way.

I actually have a couple of adult LTC ammies that will only eat if I leave the f/t mouse or rat in the cage overnight. I leave it on a conspicuous branch at lights off and 90% of the time it's gone in the morning. Incidentally, they are both males. All my females are absolute pigs. I also have one male that will only eat p/k or live. He's been in the collection for 4 years and has only eaten f/t a handful of times. Mostly he prefers them pre-killed and then I have to tease him with it pretty good.

How big is she and have you tried rats? A study done by Henderson showed that adults in the wild were feeding on mostly rats. You might want to try the above method as well as possibly a rat of appropriate size.

Good luck!

Have you considered that maybe she is pregnant? Post some pics of her.
