Yellow Blotched Map Turtle (Graptemys Flavimaculata)

s-holden Aug 12, 2003 03:19 PM

Does anyone know where I can buy some Yellow Blotched Map Turtle (Graptemys Flavimaculata) hatchlings? I have been looking to buy some for several years now and still have not found any dealers selling them. Please help.

There are not many private people breeding these that are willing to let other people know that they have them. They are a federally threatened species. Therefore, they require a USDI permit to have them in your possession (same permit as for a bog turtle). The only legal way around the permit is to have someone give you legally obtained animals with no exchange of money/services or to purchase legally obtained and/or captive bred animals from the state of which you are a resident. Bottom line is that the animals have to be of legal origin and there aren't many of those around.

When they are legally availabe (which is very rarely) they are gennerally sold for $350-700 each. Again though, you would need a permit to transport them accross state lines or take your chances with illegal animals.

Yes, U.S. Department of the Interior.
