trying to adopt

terryo Mar 18, 2007 04:20 PM

I am trying to adopt an Eastern Box. I live in New York, and have a large outdoor pen for Nora, my Ornate. I have tried several places here on the net, and they all say that I need a permit. If you try to get a permit you have to prove that it is for learning purposes...for a school...a teacher etc. I really wanted to give some poor boxie a good home, instead of buying one on the net. I won't go near a wild caught...had enough problems with Nora because of that. Thank God that she is better, and up and about..eating again. I don't want to start with a hatchling. There are so many that I see on these adoption sites that need good homes. There are also so many Eastern's around here by the "greenbelt", so I know they would do good in this climate. I would never just take one out of the woods around here...so now what? Does anyone know of a place that I could apply for a permit in New York? Thanks..Terry

Terry,

Yes, I have heard that NY is very strict about their box turtle permits, but it may be possible to get an Eastern that has been grandfathered in (they don't want old pets released). Have you joined the NY T&T Society yet? They may have a waiting list for turtles needing new home.

One day I will be dead and my turtles will have to be placed in new homes. I'm sure I'm not the only one with that future concern

I live in Michigan and also had to get a permit for my EBT. Since the one I was going to adopt had a history of captivity, it was a quick and easy process done online. I'm sure it would have been much more difficult if I had wanted to collect wild turtles.

Just curious why you do not want another ornate? She might like a boyfriend and it would simplify care. Maybe she would not like a boyfriend and you want to love an EBT. Thats a very nice picture lots of cool details.

Tess...do you have a link to the NY T&T Society ? I will join if it will help. Thank you.
I have read so much on the Ornate, and from what I understand it isn't too good to have only one female with a male as he would keep pestering her. The reason I started to try and adopt, was that I built this pen in the yard, and thought I could give a poor boxie a good home being that it was so big and I am always surfing the net and always see so many in need of homes, especially on the pet finder site. I have a little three toed that someone gave me (rich neighbors kid got tired of it) but he..she wouldn't be going out there for quite a while. I was looking for an Eastern because they are the only ones that you see in the wild around here. You see them dead on roads where there are woods and there is a load of ponds here in wooded areas where kids always find them. My kids were always bringing them home when they were young, and I always made them take me to the exact spot where they found them to put them back. I will try getting the permit and see what happens. Thank you all..Terry
