Rattlesnake I.D. question.....

Daniel Klopson Mar 18, 2007 09:18 PM

Hello rattlesnake guys! I was herping in Northern California in the Napa Valley mountain range and I found two lovely rattlers. These arnt the kind with the black and white tail Ive seen before in this area. These dont have the diamond back. They are almost banded like a kingsnake from head to tail. What are these? Thanks, for the info.... I'll try and get some pics up later... Dan

I was raised in that area and the only rattler there is C. o. oreganus. They are very varied in pattern and color. It would be nice to see a pic.

pacific rattler(not sure if it's a nothern or southern in your part of california)....and btw that's a sure way to get tagged.use a hook next time, you'd be suprised how adept they are at just sitting/balancing themselves on just about anything.very pretty snake.

I'm pretty sure it's a Northern Pacific Rattlesnake.

And yes, it was very polite of him not to poke the tip of that index finger sticking out there. Hooks are our friends.

I think I might mention just so you dont think Im insane... this was first thing in the morning temps at about 65 degrees and that animal was as cold as ice cream! Ive never seen a rattle snake move so slow. That being said, thanks for the words of WISDOM!! Hooks only from now on.. I dont have an idiot hero complex... thanks for the ID.Dan

Definitely C. o. oreganus. A real nice one. Thanks for the picture.
