Suphan Cobra

cfoley Mar 19, 2007 10:35 AM

What exactly is "suphan"? Is it a localty? A morph? All I know is what it looks like and that it is Naja kaouthia.

I will soon be receiving an adult female in trade. If I were to breed her with my albino male, what would be the outcome? Would they be normal kaouthia het albino, "suphan appearance" het albino, or maybe both het for albino?

I have seen albino suphans...very impressive. I would not mind heading that route pending how the genetics work. Otherwise, I will just aquire a male suphan.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

It is colour variant/locality type of Naja kaouthia, primarily found in the Suphan Buri (giving it its name) and Ang Thong Provinces of Thailand. In 1986 Wirot Nutphand described it as a subspecies of Naja kaouthia- Naja kaouthia suphanensis, but this is considered invalid.

I went through those areas earlier this week, but unfortunately, did not come across any.

Cheers,
Michael

Thanks for your reply, but I already know this info. Can you answer my genetics question, at least to the outcome of breeding the suphan to the amel?

I do mostly field work, not breeding. The national zoo here has bred albino N. kaouthia, but like most zoos, they do not mix variants/localities. They are the only ones I know that work with albino N. kaouthia, so I have not seen anyone mix and match them.
Cheers,
Michael
