pregnant female?

ecrowell Mar 19, 2007 12:04 PM

I'm am wondering if their is a way to tell if a female is pregnant. It has been two weeks and I believe she is getting fatter. Is their any change in behavior, or appetite I should be aware of? She is running around her cage all day, and stopped eating 3 days ago. any help would be apreciated.

Short of an x-ray there is no definitive way. Generally they look "bottom heavy". Often you can see the outlines of the eggs through her skin. They generally eat a lot while the eggs are forming and then stop eating completely. Then they usually dig all over the enclosure. If you don't use sand you might not know this. You should consider putting in a nest box just in case. It sounds like a good possibility that she may have eggs and she needs to lay them. Egg binding could be the result otherwise.

Hi
think i ad some thing to it.
most of time they wil not eat for 3,4 days .
then they start to dig for 3,4 days and then most of the time they wil lay the eggs in a 10,12inches moist potsoil r sand r mixed.
if you digging up the eggs then not turn them around but lay them in like you digge them out.
if you turn the egg it can fail then .

sounds like it is possible shes gravid. feel her belly for marble like lumps in her. those are eggs if they are there. move her to a laying bin. i use a rubbermaid bucket, soil and peete moss mixed. damped with water. pack down. you need about 12-16 inches of this on one side for her to dig and lay.

females tend to pack down food when pregnant then stop eating when getting ready to lay. give her a warm bath before putting her into the egg laying bin. then after shes done laying, another bath is good to relax and rehydrate her.
