not drinking?

reptigurl Aug 12, 2003 04:11 PM

I haven't seen my leopard gecko go near its water dish except to hide under it, (it has a sort of a cave under it) when Ive held my gecko I have tried to set it down in front of either teh water in the water dish or in front of the humid hide, which by the way doesn't seem to be getting used either. Could my gecko be drinking at night, (it doesn't seem really active during the day) or could it become dehydrated?
thanx,
mal

p.s. I still haven't named my gecko yet so if you have any suggestions please post them!!!

It probly drinks at night.... I never see my geckos go to the calcium dish except when i woke up at 3:00am and looked and i saw one at it. Do you have your humid hide on the warm or cool side? They seem to like it better when it's on the warm side. As for names is it a male or female? Hope this helps, Katie

The humid hide is on the warm side and I mist it every day. I think it might not like it because it is a white container (I've heard they like darker coloured hides better) Actually my gec pretty mush only uses the water dish hide. Today is the first day in a while I've seen it in any other hide and it is still on the cool side. I've checked my temps and they seem fine (around 95F on the warm side and 85F on the cool side)I use paper towel in the humid hide so I might try spagnum (sp?) moss instead.
As for whether its a male or female I think it's a female, but I dont know if it is too early to tell.

Ok, do you know how old it is? If it's about 4 to 5 months you can tell it's gender sometimes earlier. This is what i did for my female. She never went in the humid hide so i picked her up and put her head in the hide so she would have to go in before she could come back out. Then once she went in i covered the entrance until she stopped trying to get out. She calmed down and she's loved the hide ever since. If it is a female how about annie or lea or maybe hilda. Mine are named: Athena Apollo and Artemis. Katie

I don't know how old it is but if its the right age but if it is its a female. I like the name Lea for a leo so as long as I'm right about it being a female thats her name. thanx for the idea.
As for the humid hide I trie your strategy and Lea stayed in the hide for a while, so I'll see if she decides to go back in it or not.
thanx again for the help, If it wasn't for this forum I would only have the info from the pet store! (so far wrong warm side temp and they told me I needed a UV light)
so thanx,
mal

95 is actually a little warm the warm side should be as close to but not over 90 degrees as possible.

I'll make sure to keep the temp there
thanx,

You probably just don't see him drinking, and when he does drink, it's just a few laps so you can't tell. As for the humid hide, it's possible that he just doesn't know it's there. He'll find it when he needs it though.
