when to try and switch to rats?

ydrive2wd Mar 19, 2007 06:01 PM

hello guys, im pretty new to the forum. I was just curious when you guys have switched your burm over to rats.. currently my burm is about 30-31" or so. ive been feeding him 2 adult mice every week.. some ideas would be good, id rather switch him over to rats as soon as possible..i also can only get live mice/rats right now untill i get a freezer to store f/t rodents.

thanks,
Nick

I don't ever think I gave my burm mice. You could probably do small rats. Burms are pretty thick and should be Ok. I have a green Ananconda about that size right not that eats small rats. But you have to judge that based on the size. With my burm I never had problems switching food. She was always hungry, once she got going. If you have problems, you could always give it a mouse and while its wrapped it drop a small thawed rat in on top. They usually eat it because they think they killed it, then it will start to get the taste.

wow thanks for the quick respons.. the only problem i am having, is finding some small enough rats to give it a shot since i can only get live prey right now. im working on getting a freezer for the basement to store some f/t. i should feed the burm soemthing about the size of the widest area on him right right?

With burms I've found that doing a LITTLE thicker than their body at the thickest point is acceptable. It's your snake, you know the animal. Could it handle a big 'ol steak or is it a hamburger kinda guy?
