Nails?

I have 2 year and a half water monitors. I've heard that its bad to let monitors nails grow too long. Does anyone else believe in this? So I've been taking them to Prehisoric Pets to get them cut but its quite a drive. They're now about 3 feet now so I was thinking about taking them out in the backyard once in a while to grind them down a little. Is this a viable option?

nails do grind down naturally and a hard rough surface does this well
