splinter in the hemi AGAIN!

Nokturnel Tom Mar 19, 2007 08:41 PM

I am done with letting snakes breed on aspen. Last year I had my male het White Wall Speck get a nice splinter and tonight I find a huge piece of aspen lodged in my het PB male. I know most of the time this does not happen, but twice in the same decade is enough for me....bring on the newspaper. Tom Stevens

Just another issue to add to my list of why I always have and will continue to use newspaper...

Hope the snake is ok..

He was not acting like a snake in pain....and he is a big boy. I actually have a back up male het PB and that is a relief. Many people hate the idea of having extra males as if it is a waste of space or something. I have found myself grateful for having extras around a few times now... you just never know what may happen. Tom Stevens

Tom,

As you are aware I use pine shavings. But during breeding season I go out of my way to get pine from a source that has very large chips to avoid this very problem.

After hearing that this has happened to you twice, i will probably use newspaper just to be safe. I have a couple males in particualr that are very important to me breeding plans this year as they are set up with 5 or six females,,AND NO BACKUP MALE. You ca bet I will only put them on newspaper to breed. To important not to have problems with them.

I always use newspaper. It is cheap and easy to clean. I've never had a problem using newspaper. Buddy.

Thanks for the heads up on that problem Tom. I dont have much that breeds on aspen shavings as most of mine are on newspaper but hearing that will give me some good first hand info to consider. Randy W.
