Panther hatchling

DragonladyTRW Mar 19, 2007 09:33 PM

I have about 22 panther eggs that were layed (sp?) on June 27, 2006. One hatched on Feb. 7 and it lived until Feb. 14. Another hatched on March 2nd and soon began drinking and eating fruit flies,as the one before her. She was doing well until I found her dead with her tongue fully extended. She was well hydrated and there was plenty of food in her enclosure. Is there something I'm doing wrong? The rest of the clutch is still incubating. Any advice is appreciated.

Sincerely,
Broken Hearted (

I hope the rest will be okay.

Thanks for your reply.
The rest of the clutch are in moist vermiculite in a dark cabinet. I put them there when she laid them last June. The temp is about 72 degrees.
The rest of the clutch seems to be healthy. It seems like they take forever between hatchings. My veiled clutch hatched on after the other like clockwork with great success.
Is this gap normal for panthers?
Thank you

You said..."The rest of the clutch seems to be healthy"...glad to hear that.

You said..."It seems like they take forever between hatchings"...are your eggs close together or spread apart a bit?

You said..."My veiled clutch hatched on after the other like clockwork with great success"...again, were the eggs close together or spread apart a little?

You asked..."Is this gap normal for panthers?"...generally when the eggs are close together, they all hatch at about the same time. When there is space between them, they hatch more individually over a few days or even a month. Also, different areas of the incubation container could be warmer or cooler than other areas so the hatch could be quicker for some and slower for others.

Thank you for your great advice!
The eggs in the clutch are close together. I had another hatch yesterday and it's taking its time approaching. The last one hatched 3 weeks ago. The eggs look like they're 'shedding' with little tiny cracks in them. I guess patience is a virtue?
Oh also, I should remove the hatchling from the clutch, right?
Thanks again.

Mine have always hatching within days of each other, except one that was a whole month later than all her clutchmates. I place eggs typically spaced about an inch from one another. Soon after they hatch, once they start walking around, I move them (actually I let them move themselves to an extent) into an enclosure with little branches and food.

Hi
Thanks for your response. My clutch eggs are a little less than 1 inch apart and they still take up to 3 weeks between hatchings. The little one I have now is walking around the clutch now (I'm hoping it will wake it's siblings) and almost ready to go into its new enclosure. I'm just worried as usual!

Thanks again!

Any news on the ones that remained to hatch?
