...and a knockout in my eyes too. And mighty healthy I might add. That guy raises some incredibly healthy snakes, doesn't he?

I bought the super nice '05 melanistic male he had and that young man could easily breed a female this year in my opinion. He wasn't cooled over the winter but I just might see how interested he is in my melanistic female here soon. You GO boy.....

I heard the whole story. I'm glad to see you got him too.

I don't see how it could hurt to try him this year. Plus I'd guess you have a few up and coming females from your 05 clutch that are het. Put me on the list for a female, Mike

I still have a trio from that bunch, I'll most likely let the leonis male go now and keep the two females. Sold one nice pair to a guy in Texas... lost in the mist.

I'll let you know what happens with the melanistic pair.

is melanistic a recessive gene? I thought it was just another color phase like MS and leonis. Although I'm just getting into variables this year so I may be totally mistaken. It was my impression though that while offspring similar to parents was most likely that any of the appearances could "theoretically" be spawned. Any info is appreciated.

Sean.

Hi Sean,

I think you were responding to my post and I'm far from an expert on this, but I'll tell you what I know.

I personally don't know of anyone who honestly knows for sure, or has worked with them to the extent of being able to offer enough of their results to be able to verify that it is one thing or another. It seems to be rather unpredictable. I don't yet have any personal experience with breeding melanistic to melanistic so I can't offer anything either. I can tell you that there are those who have worked with them, and have bred melanistic to melanistic and not gotten a single melanistic in one or more clutches and that's my source of confusion. Not being a genetics guru and only having a basic understanding, to me hearing that alone eliminates qualifying it as being controlled by either a common recessive or co-dominant gene. The way I read it, pairing together animals that are homozygous for a trait (would have paired recessive or co-dominant alleles in this case) should produce 100% homozygous offspring that visually display the trait. I hope to have a little personal experience with these under my belt in the next few years, so I guess I'll see for myself.

Most all other colors or pattern traits that Thayeri are capable of are more predictable.

Thanks for the info. Yeah thats pretty much what I thought but I got thrown when I saw "het" mentioned lol. I did also hear from someone, I forget who btu was here on kingsnake, that the MS phase tended to throw more melanistic then others but still not alot.

good thing you are using that girl to keep your mouse supply at bay because God knows you shouldn't breed it with anything you have.

I swear I've never seen a thayeri more hideous in my life. Send it back immediately.

Russ
