Possible shell rot

verybeary86 Mar 20, 2007 06:19 AM

I have a Murray River turtle. Approximately 5 months old. She has these little black spots on her shell, and I have no idea what is causing them. I have purchased fungus stuff for the water and solution that is supposed to remove all the harmful waste from the water. The tank has a filter, heater and UV/B light. Turtle will not bask on rock so i take her outside in the sun each day. Please let me know if you have any idea what these spots are and how to get rid of them. I have a pic of the spots but don't know how to post it on here.

Look at the top of this page you are reading now & find "Photo Gallery"
Click on that then follow the instructions.
They are very clear, and it's easy to post a photo once you follow those instructions.. just be sure to down size your photo so that it's very small, it will appear larger once it's in the photo gallery.
After you have the photo in the gallery then all you have to do is open a new window to post on the message board, scroll down & the link to your photo is in your new window here.. just highlight it & your photo is on the board.

About shell rot.. I've seen black spots on turtles that were algae so they scraped off, I've also see black spots that were just part of the color of the shell. The shell color does tend to change over time.. the only shell rot I've seen is white.
Here's a picture of a map turtle that had a severe case of shell rot.. in fact it died.
I'd be interested in seeing your photo
