Whole lotta olive python *D/U Warning*

Chance Mar 20, 2007 09:19 AM

Yesterday we were doing some work outside and decided to take the opportunity of beautiful weather to get some outside pictures of the olives. IMHO, natural light always brings out a herp's true colors best. Some of these ended up being out of focus because they were taken as the sun was setting, but they're good nonetheless. Enjoy.

Smaller Male

(I thought it was interesting how the camera either captured the irridescence or the olive tones depending on from which end of the snake the pictures were taken. From the tail facing the head, you see the brown. From the head facing the tail, you see the irridescence. The irridiophores must all the aligned in relatively the same direction.)

Olives are amazing looking snakes, thanks for for sharing the photos. I had a pair of juvenile Olives that I got in a trade and it ended up being a bad deal as they were picky eaters which I hear is unusual for them. That was almost ten years ago and I still contemplate getting a pair and to hopefully have better luck this time around but space is an issue right now. You should be very proud of those Olives, they are just beautiful.

Haha! Very nice, Chance!

You are SOOOOO keeping that extra male, buddy!!!

I did a photo shoot outside last weekend on a little piece of manzanita I nailed to a piece of particle board, but way too small for my olive to hang out on!

I'm always paranoid about all the bad critters infesting them if I put him on the lawn like you did, but yes, the outdoor pics are the best!

I'll have to get a very large piece of something to mount so that he can climb out on outside... hmmmm, maybe I'll just let him cruise in the oak tree out front, instead?

Thanks for the compliments guys. The snakes really do just speak for themselves. Every time I look at them, I wonder why the crap did I sell the last pair! You're right Todd, the big guy is going nowhere!

As for the nasty critters, yeah there's always a possibility one could pick up a tick, but I always check them over before I put them back into their enclosures. And as often as I look at them, ticks would have no time to reproduce. Any mites or mite-like inverts around here wouldn't infest snakes, so I'm not worried about them. It's just that the best pictures we've ever taken have been in natural light, usually either in the evening or on an overcast day.

Thanks for the compliments Norm. I, of course, can't take any credit for the animals' natural beauty - that's due solely to the Australian environment sculpting them to their current state. But what a state eh?! These guys have to have the most subtle (and IMHO beautiful) iridescence of any snake species. It's the kind that doesn't just jump out like a rainbow boa or white lipped python, but subtly infuses the light. Okay, so I'm going off on an odd tangent.

Congrats on obtaining your Apodora. I've never kept them, but certainly wouldn't mind doing so. I just hope people start producing cbb animals more often so that the species as a whole will become more available.

Anyway, by all means, post pics of yours!

Here you go, Chance:
males

female

Just got my third male today. All three are captive hatched. Unfortunately, he came without a heat pack and was a frozen ball. I thought I was going to lose him...he barely flickered. Two hours under a heat bulb and he appears to be fine, no fluids coming out of his mouth and moving around well. Hopefully I dodged a bullet.

Apadoras seem to need more humidity than most pythons. when mine shed, it looks like someone killed one....nothing but hunks of shed skin all over the place.
